Old Springfield — the mature-tree neighborhoods like Rountree, Phelps Grove, University Heights, and the blocks around downtown — mostly runs on vitrified clay laterals laid before 1970. Clay comes in short segments with a joint every few feet, and after decades of settlement those joints open just enough for the silver maples and pin oaks overhead to find them.
